A new device could provide relief from migraines with aura, a type of visual, sensory or motor disturbance that happens before the start of the headache. The Cerena Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS), approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December, is the first device to help those with this type of migraine.
The prescription device, made by eNeura Therapeutics, is approved for adults age 18 and older. It should be used after the migraine pain starts. Users hold the TMS against the back of their heads while pressing a button to release magnetic energy, which, in turn, stimulates the occipital cortex in the brain. The device can be used daily to decrease or stop pain.
The device has some limitations. For instance, it should not be used in people with pacemakers or who have epilepsy.
