The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) is pleased to announce its research and fellowship award winners, who were honored at NHF’s 61st Annual Meeting in October 2009.
Salley Pels, MD, and Jeremiah Boles, MD, received the NHF/Baxter Clinical Fellowship Award. The award provides mentoring and clinical training by experienced doctors to prepare physicians for careers in bleeding and clotting disorders research. The program is generously funded by Baxter.
Pels wil develop advanced skills in clinical hemostasis and learn rigorous methodologies of clinical trial design, completion and monitoring. She also will continue her work on several ongoing research studies under the mentorship of Diana Beardsley, MD, PhD, at Yale University.
Boles’ training will include rigorous laboratory research and career guidance in hemostasis. His fellowship mentor at the University of North Carolina is Nigel Key, MD. Also involved in Boles’ training will be Raj Kasthuri, MD, a former NHF Clinical Fellowship recipient.
Keri C. Smith, PhD, received the Career Development Award for “Identification and Amelioration of T-cell Mediated Inflammatory Cytokines that Contribute to Anti-Factor VIII Inhibitor Formation in Hemophilia A.”
The Judith Graham Pool Postdoctoral Research Fellowship was awarded to Andrew Yee, PhD, for “Fine Structure-Function Mapping VWF-FVIII Interaction.”
Jocelyn Bessette Gorlin, RN, CPNP, was awarded the Nursing Excellence Fellowship. Jacqueline Lefkowitz, LCSW, MA, MSW, received the Social Work Excellence Fellowship, and David L. Oleson, PT, PCS, and Patricia Tobase, PT, DPT, OCS, were awarded the Physical Therapy Excellence Fellowship, funded through the support of Novo Nordisk.
