A study of 35,000 Finnish people, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, showed that chronic sleep loss can cause poor lifestyle choices when it comes to health. People who began the study in good health and with a normal duration of sleep, maintained healthy habits. They exercised, didn’t overindulge in alcohol or food, and were able to quit smoking.
During the up to four years the subjects were followed, researchers found a correlation between sleep disruptions or shorter nights’ sleep and declining health. They found that poor sleep quality led to riskier lifestyle choices, including increased alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and obesity among people who had formerly displayed healthier lifestyles.
